How to Tell TRC20 and ERC20 Addresses Apart

TRC20 and ERC20 are the two most commonly used token standards for USDT. While both networks support the same Tether stablecoin, their wallet addresses look different and operate on entirely separate blockchains. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in crypto and can result in permanent loss of funds.

Address Format Comparison

The easiest way to distinguish a TRC20 address from an ERC20 address is by looking at the first characters. A TRC20 address always begins with a capital T — for example: TGa977k25A3H14v63946F89c89437b0193. An ERC20 address always begins with 0x — for example: 0xAbCdEf1234567890aBcDeF1234567890aBcDeF. TRC20 addresses are 34 characters long (Base58), while ERC20 addresses are 42 characters long (hexadecimal with the 0x prefix).

Network Performance Comparison

TRC20 operates on the TRON blockchain and offers very low transaction fees (often less than $1) and fast confirmation speeds of 3 to 5 seconds. ERC20 operates on the Ethereum blockchain, which can have significantly higher gas fees — especially during network congestion — and confirmation times of 10 to 20 seconds or longer. For everyday USDT transfers, TRC20 is usually the preferred choice due to its cost efficiency.

Never send ERC20 USDT to a TRC20 address, or vice versa. Both addresses may look valid in your wallet interface, but sending to the wrong network will result in funds that cannot be recovered. Always verify the network label (TRC20 or ERC20) in your wallet or exchange before confirming any withdrawal or transfer.
